About
Adalia Rose is an American social media influencer with a fatal genetic condition called progeria. Beginning in 2011, memes about Rose became popular on various online forums and social media sites.
Online History
Adalia Rose was born on December 10th, 2006 in Round Rock, Texas. Rose suffers from the genetic condition progeria. The word progeria comes from the Greek "progeros" meaning 'prematurely old'. Progeria affects children and gives them an appearance of accelerated aging. Children with Progeria are born looking healthy. When they are about 10 to 24 months old, features of accelerated aging start to appear. They become thin and start to lose hair and their face grows abnormally.[1]
On December 22nd, 2011, the now-verified Adalia Rose Facebook [2] account launched. This Facebook was original launched to keep friends and family abreast of Adalia's condition.
Roughly six months later, on May 3rd, 2012, she posted her first photo on Facebook,[3] receiving more than 1.4 million reactions, 30,000 comments and 30,000 shares (shown below, left).
The following month, on June 2nd, she posted her first YouTube video. "Jesus loves me" received more than 3 million views.
On December 6th, 2014, Rose published her most popular video to-date. "Makeup tutorial on my mom!!" received more than 44 million views in less than seven years (shown below). As of March 2021, the YouTube page has more than 2.6 million subscribers.
On February 18th, 2017, Rose launched her Instagram [7] account. The first post received more than 3,400 likes in less than five years (shown below).
Criticism
Trolling Campaign
In 2011, threads regarding Adalia Rose began appearing on the 4chan imageboard /b/. Memes about Adalia and her condition, which generally mocked her appearance, grew in popularity.
On July 15th, 2012 a Facebook page called "Stop the aliens before its to late" was created. This page posted images of Adalia photoshopped in alien movies or captioned pictures, making fun of her striking appearance and saying she's an alien.
Many responded negatively to the group. "Help Stop These Jerks From Making Fun of Adalia Rose" and "Ban the Page 'Stop the aliens before it's too late' cause it's sick" launched. These groups claim to support Rose and hoped to bring awareness to trolling against her.[4][5][6]
