Cactuar is a monster from Final Fantasy VI and continuing to appear in many later FF releases.

On the Internet, Cactuar has become the subject of a popular series of Newgrounds animations and other fanfics due to simple Video Game fandom. But on SomethingAwful, Cactuar's physical resemblance to a Swastika was further exploited in a number of images. This practice was later carried to 4Chan, in much the same manner as O RLY, Party Hard, and Ha! Ha! Guy

Something Awful

On March 2nd, 2002, Something Awful featured the Cactuar fansite Cactuar's Desert Prison as their Awful Link of the Day.
The site contained a number of adult-themed fan-fics involving various Final Fantasy characters.

Shortly thereafter, goons began photoshopping Cactuar into images, and referencing Cactuar in poetry.

Beginning in 2003, Newgrounds user Earth-Mage-2000 created a series of popular flash animations starring Cactuar, beginning with Final Fantasy Road Trip and followed up with:

Earth-Mage-2000's Cactuar animations gained a significant amount of user interest when Final Fantasy Gil Quest was awarded the #1 Daily Feature on Newgrounds on January 1st, 2004.

Cactuar has appeared in countless threads on 4chan, used in a variety of ways. One popular use is to start a thread featuring the following image:

with the text "Don't Mind Me, On My Way to Page 10" which invariably instigates users to post in the thread.

Knowing that /b/ is filled with Anons with a penchant for Naziism, Cactuar's pseudo-Swastika resemblance gives it a certain comic appeal.
