Free Robux refers to a series jokes about hacks and scams that players of the video game Roblox use to acquire free in-game currency.
Origin
In September 2006, the video game Roblox launched. Within the game, players earn a currency called "Robux," which they can exchange for real currency. The earliest known usage of the a "Free Robux" scam was published by YouTuber YeBudda on April 19th, 2012. The video (shown below) received more than 8,000 views in six years.
Spread
In April 2015, Imgflip [1] user MOABMASTER published a "Free Robux" image macro that reads, "I went to the free Robux site and my account is locked now WTF!" The post (shown below, left) received more than 3,000 views in two years.
Two years later, "Free Robux" and "Robux Hack" memes grew in popularity. On February 23rd, 2017, Redditor [2] Norby012 published a Why Is The FBI Here meme in the /r/dankmemes subreddit. The post (shown below, center) received more than 2,500 points (98% upvoted).
Several months later, Redditor[3] AguiPls posted a Google, 11 Minutes Later meme in which the author Googles "how to escape the FBI" 11 minutes after Googling "how to get free robux." The post (shown below, right) received more than 1,600 points (97% upvoted).
