Overview

Justin Mohn Beheading His Father YouTube Video refers to a viral gore video in which Levittown, Pennsylvania man Justin Mohn claimed responsibility for murdering his father, federal employee Mike Mohn, by beheading him and displaying the head on camera in an upload to YouTube in late January 2024. In the video, Mohn ranted against President Joe Biden, "woke mobs," Black Lives Matter and other left-wing causes or subjects. After being posted, the crime quickly garnered significant media coverage and discourse online. Claims that Mohn had a previously questionable history on platforms like Discord, Reddit and 4chan also emerged the following day, including purports of him being alerted to the FBI in July 2023.

Background

On January 30th, 2024, Justin Mohn uploaded a video entitled "Mohn's Militia – Call To Arms For American Patriots" in which he displayed the decapitated head of his father Mike Mohn in a plastic bag and later in a cooking pot (censored screenshots shown below).^[1] He said his father, a federal employee, was now in hell as a traitor to America. He also ranted against left-wing causes and espoused right-wing conspiracy theories in the 14-minute-long video. YouTube removed the video after it was on the site for six hours.

Mohn was arraigned at 4 a.m. on January 31st in Pennsylvania and is charged with first-degree murder, abuse of a corpse and possession of an instrument of crime with intent.^[2]

Developments

As news of the crime spread online, reactions somewhat split alongside political ideologies. Left-leaning responses tended to focus on the content of Mohn's rant, arguing that conservative ideologies and conspiracies helped drive him to commit the crime. For example, on January 31st, 2024, X / Twitter user @ISASaxonists^[3] posted that conservative conspiracies "emboldened" Mohn to carry out "extreme violence," gaining over 30 likes in one hour (shown below, left).

Also that day, Twitter user @BoxElderdust^[4] posted a similar reading, arguing that people like Mohn are what the Republican Party has been "creating" for years, gaining over 40 likes in two hours (shown below, right).

On the right, a number of conservative users voiced the opinion that the murder was a psyop orchestrated by Democrats to make Republicans look bad. On January 30th, Laura Loomer combed through Mohn's social media and found a post in which he expressed that he didn't like Donald Trump. She argued that Mohn expressing he was part of a militia coincided with Democratic Senators forwarding a bill to ban paramilitary militias in the United States, therefore Mohn was a "Democratic Patsy" to advance the banning of paramilitary militias.^[5] Her tweet gained over 4,200 retweets and 8,100 likes in one day (shown below, left).

Also on January 30th, 2024, Twitter user @MJTruthUltra^[6] forwarded a similar conspiracy, gaining over 2,300 retweets and 4,200 likes in a similar timeframe (shown below, right).

On Reddit, Justin Mohn and his viral video were discussed in numerous posts to the site in late January 2024. On January 31st, a post to the /r/TerrifyingAsFuck^[8] subreddit sharing mugshots of Mohn received over 680 upvotes and 180 comments in two hours.

Also on January 31st, a post to /r/crappymusic^[9] by Redditor CalbertCorpse included a purported song from Justin Mohn's Spotify^[10] account titled "Justin's Stalkers, Pt. 1," which received over 200 upvotes and 130 comments in five hours (seen below).

Alleged Online History

Justin Mohn was allegedly known to some on the internet prior to the murder. On July 14th, 2023, a post on 4chan documented purported issues with Mohn,^[7] including his previous termination from Progressive, frivolous lawsuits and attempts to build a militia. A user in the thread said they reported Mohn to the FBI "just in case" (seen below).
