Project MemeX
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: April 1st, 2018
The global average moisture content of dank memes is drying up. The short-term normification rate keeps rising, the average meme lifespan rapidly shrinking. In accord with our mission to preserve every meme that leaves a streak on the internets, over here at Know Your Meme, we are taking a bold step forward to preserving internet heritage. Introducing MemeX.
The Mission
Project MemeX is a digital preservation initiative designed to ensure against any permanent loss or damage of historically significant digital cultural artifacts by launching a seriously advanced satellite into lunar orbit, from where it will indefinitely serve as our remote backup memory storage via uplink from our database. In case of a global-scale server outage or crisis on Earth, the satellite will commence its emergency safety protocol and go to "sleep" mode, or until satellite is "woken up" via transmission from mission control.
The Process
Project MemeX consists of three stages:
1) 24-hour specimeme collection and appraisal campaign during which all members of Know Your Meme are encouraged to participate. It begins now and ends tonight at 10:59 pm (EST). Status Update: Complete
2) 1028-bit data encryption of the final collection and data transfer into a memory storage and secure placement of the meme storage in a titanium alloy vault. Status Update: Complete
3) An orbital spaceflight from an undisclosed location in the Eastern Coast U.S. The launch and its orbital exit will be livestreamed on the site. Status Update: Standby; Repair in Progress
During the final launch status check, we detected a severe rupture on one of the pipes feeding spaghetti sauce into the main thruster. As we continue to investigate the issue, #MemeX launch has been delayed for now. Stay tuned for more updates.
