About
Netorare (寝取られ, most commonly abbreviated as NTR) is a notoriously controversial genre of hentai featuring cuckoldry (an act of adultery). As a fetish, NTR hentai are designed to provoke jealousy in the audience by proxy by having a character indulge in sexual activity with someone other than the protagonist. This has given NTR a highly infamous reputation amongst hentai fans, who frequently express their displeasure over the genre.
Origin
Netora as a Japanese term for cuckoldry literally translates to "taken away by sleeping with." In typical NTR stories, the heroine will be introduced as having a close relationship with- or love interest for the male protagonist. The story will then show the aforementioned heroine being intimate with another man. The nature of these affairs vary per story, as will the outcome; in certain cases also involving "Mind Break", another infamous hentai genre in which a heroine is mentally scarred through intercourse.
According to Tiyu 12-sai (ちゆ12歳), a decades-old blog for the Japanese otaku culture[1], "NTR" as internet slang has been circulating on the web around late 2001, and he introduced Nebeya (寝部屋), a website for otaku people fond of this kind of situation in hentai games, seems its origin. On July 18th, 2001, its webmaster Kten coined this acronym in his bbs when he replied to a visitor asking him of any good idea to shorten the term "Netorare games." The blog post also points out that the oldest instance using this word on a thread for Netorare games in BBSPINK, 2channel's sister board community for adult content, was found on September 1st of that year, and its usage began increasing in the following year, 2002. Besides, Tiyu mentions Japanese critic Nobuhiro Motohashi's (本橋信宏) 2011 book that explains the word "NTR" was born in an online community for married men who want their partners to get cuckolded.
