Okay Guy is a sullen-looking rage comic character who is typically accompanied by the caption "okay." The face is often used in the final panel of comics meant to convey a feeling of hopeless resignation.
Origin
The illustration is rumored to have originated on the imageboard 4chan, but no archived thread has been found. The earliest known instance of the face was posted on the Russian Internet humor website Joy Reactor[1] on June 24th, 2009.
Spread
On April 16th, 2011, the "Okay Guy" Quickmeme[2] page was created, featuring the Okay Guy face in advice animal-style image macros with captions describing disappointing situations (shown below). Within the next two years, the page received over 3,300 new submissions.
On May 7th, the "Okay Guy Comic" Tumblr[3] blog was launched, which highlighted notable rage comics, image macros and photoshops featuring the rage face. On Juy 29th, a Facebook[4]page titled "Okay Guy" was created, gaining upwards of 440 likes in the first two years. On November 16th, a post was submitted to the /r/pics[7] subreddit, featuring a photo of a man bearing a striking resemblance to the Okay Guy (shown below). Prior to being archived, the post received over 8,000 up votes and 380 comments.
On December 15th, the @okayguy_meme Twitter[6] feed was launched, which tweeted notable captions from the image macro series. On December 27th, Redditor ryansayshai submitted a post titled "The Original Okay Guy" to the /r/funny[5] subreddit, including an image comparing the rage comic face to the character Toby from the comedy television series The Office (shown below). Prior to being archived, the post accumulated more than 5,200 up votes and 100 comments.
