Stan Lee (born Stanley Lieber) was an American comic book writer and former Editor-in-Chief, executive vice president and publisher at Marvel Comics. Stan Lee was a co-creator for many of the most iconic superheroes Marvel produced including Thor, X-Men, Spider-Man, Daredevil, Fantastic Four, Iron Man and the Hulk as well as creating The Avengers.

Death

On November 12th, 2018, Lee was rushed to the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California where he was subsequently pronounced dead at the age of 95. That day, a Twitter Moments^[6] page titled "Stan Lee dead at 95" was published, highlighting various reactions to Lee's death. Meanwhile, posts about the news reached the front page of the /r/news,^[7] /r/marvelstudios,^[8] /r/movies^[9] and /r/marvel^[10] subreddits. Also on November 12th, the Comicbook.com YouTube channel uploaded a tribute video to Lee, featuring a montage of photographs and clips of Lee appearing in various films (shown below).

Stan Lee maintains an official website, therealstanlee.com, where people interested in Stan Lee can find interviews, trailers, and more related to Stan Lee and Marvel Comics.^[1] As of October 30th, 2015, the Stan Lee account on Facebook has 5,031,000 likes, the @TheRealStanLee account on Twitter has 2,130,000 followers, and the therealstanlee account on Instagram has 354,000 followers.^[2][3][4] His Youtube channel World of Heroes has had notable success, gaining 458,000 subscribers and his 25 most popular videos all have over 1,000,000 views as of October 30th, 2015.^[5]

Stan Lee Cameos

Stan Lee Cameos are a meme in the Marvel universe where Stan Lee makes a cameo in nearly all Marvel movies (shown below). Due to the massive popularity of Marvel and their movie franchise this meme is certainly well-known but exists more in film than online. That being said there has been a large amount of online discussion regarding his cameos.

World of Warcraft Cameo

On January 8th, 2019, videogame developer Blizzard started public testing of content patch 8.1.5 for MMORPG World of Warcraft. On the same day, Twitter^[11] user @BS_Schouten tweeted about discovering a Stan Lee tribute in the game.

In the game, NPC character Stanley is found roaming the Stormwind City location^[12], sometimes shouting the Latin word "Excelsior!", Stan Lee's life motto.^[13]

Two more Stanley models were discovered in the patch through data mining.^[14] As of January 11th, 2019, their exact location in the game had not been discovered.

Captain Marvel Tweet

On March 6th, 2019, Stan Lee's official Twitter^[12] account posted a tweet promoting an article about the Captain Marvel movie premiere (shown below). Within 24 hours, the tweet gained over 12,500 likes and 900 retweets.

In response to the tweet, many criticized the company POW Entertainment for using the deceased writer's account posthumously for promotion. Several posts reached the front page of various subreddits, including /r/KotakuInAction,^[15] /r/Marvel^[16] and /r/CorporateFacepalm.^[17]
