About
The Joker is a DC comics supervillain who terrorizes the fictional city of Gotham. The archenemy of Batman, he is a psychopathic and cunning criminal who takes on the guise of a clown. The Joker's motive behind his crime sprees is usually for his own amusement.
History
The Joker made his debut appearance in Batman #1 on April 25th, 1940. Jerry Robinson, Bill Finger and Bob Kane are credited for creating the character. Since then, the Joker has made appearances throughout the golden, silver, bronze, and modern ages of DC comics.
The Joker has also made a number of appearances on screen. The most popular ones include his appearance in (shown below, from left to right) 1960's Batman (played by Cesar Romero)[1], 1989's Batman movie (played by Jack Nicholson)[2], Batman: The Animated Series (voiced by Mark Hamill)[3], Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight (played by Heath Ledger),[4] Jared Leto in Suicide Squad and Joaquin Phoenix in Joker.
Online Presence
On December 2nd, 2006, Urban Dictionary user The Joker HAHA submitted an entry about the Joker.[7] On July 18th, 2008, Urban Dictionary Slatte submitted another entry about the Joker[8], describing him as "The most badass clown this side of Gotham." On March 6th, 2012, the Joker subreddit was launched and gathered over 5,100 readers in 3 years.[5] A Facebook page dedicated to the Joker has 378,000 likes as of May 2015.[6] On November 20th, 2013, YouTube channel VariantComics uploaded a video discussing the history of the Joker (shown below, left) which gained up to 1.1 million views and 1,227 comments in a year. On March 16th, 2014, WatchMojo YouTube channel uploaded a video that compares the portrayal of the Joker between Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger (shown below, right) which gained up to 4.5 million views and 11,364 comments in a year.
On Deviantart, typing the keyword "The Joker" would yield more than 339,000 results as of May 2015[9].
